CA Dale Never Fail

Image
There are CA's throughout each building to help solve our problems and allow us to have a smooth time settling in and creating bonds with people on our floor level. CA Dale has to find ways to illuminate different themes throughout our floor and set up different programs to create floor group chats to connect with residents and ensure they are doing okay. While doing all that they are met with issues along the way that can sometimes be challenging or unexpected to the point where there force to make difficult decisions, after spending time observing different CA's and their job. I had the chance to interview CA Dale and get his opinion on what it takes to be a CA, the different aspects and challenges that come with his job, and how he deals with those tasks.   The first question I ask was "What's the most challenging thing as a CA?" He replied by saying "Dealing with different incidents, but mostly the ones that have to do with involving cops". I und

Life in Dorm halls is a bit different from living in an apartment. Being a CA is one of the jobs that keep the building in shape and available to students. My personal CA, Lia allowed me to ask him about his experience as a CA. "Being a CA has its benefits for sure, but the responsibility can put a little pressure on me at times". One of the benefits of being a CA is having your own room free of charge. That all sounds enticing and all, but one wrong step and you could lose your job in a flash. The purpose of being CA's in the building is to assist 1st year students and to be a resource. They also help enforce Bloomsburg University policy and crisis response. "Being a CA is a bit of a double-edged sword, because while it has many benefits that would help me financially, and give me connections as well as develop skills to be used in the work force, it also a burden to many CA's who find themselves struggling". " Being a CA doesn't take away from th

Peculiar Professor

Image
Walking into a classroom that is octagon shaped that has about 25 students and seeing only 2 girls can be a bit nerve racking for someone who doesn't know anything going into the field. On top of that, a professor that has many tattoos, a flannel, jeans, and a baseball cap with a military patch on it is teaching the class.  The professor's first words to start class are said with as much sarcasm as you can ever dream of, "There is something bad for you, but good for me." he exclaims walking to the left side of the classroom and resting his smiling face on his hand. Most of the students groan and some even make quiet comments "What does he mean by that?" whispers a boy. One answers, "I'm not sure, but it must be bad!" He never does clearly state what the bad news is, so most students pay as much attention to class as they can to figure out what is in store for them.      This is how Dr. Snyder, a Digital Forensics and Cybersecurity Professor, gr

Christine the Pristine RA

Mr.Crabs Choking      In  Each dorm complex, community assistants help ensure the overall quality of life for the residents they watch over and preserve the rules/regulations of residents' life. Christine has drawn upon her Art Studio major, and it shows through the many decorations plastered around the halls of the 2nd floor of Montour. These small additions to the corridors and entrance are small contributions that RAs like Christine have made to improve Montour.     The 2nd floor gives off the feeling of a hotel illuminated by brightly boxed lights seeming unnerving without the additions made by Christine. When walking up to the 2nd floor two foyers stand in front of you. One goes straight to the lounge area and another on the left has an abundance of posters for different clubs and bulletin boards that have images of SpongeBob characters. Posted with words that correlate with the character on how to adjust to campus life each one different than the rest giving life to the corri

The Hidden Gem

Image
February  9th, 2022 The Hidden Gem Walking   down the main street of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, you come across a nearly 200-year-old church with a hidden gem in the basement. The First Presbyterian Church has a long history of helping the community and now is the site of The Union County Giving Closet. The Giving Closet is a charitable, nonprofit organization that serves families who are registered to the Union County Food Bank. It provides new or gently used  clothes and shoes  to  children up to 18 years of age. Alison Collins is a kind, positive person who developed The Giving Closet in April of 2022. She said with a smile, "My purpose is to provide for children and make it easier for their parents." Alison works for The Presbyterian Church and The Giving Closet. Often, her hours tend to overlap. Many days, she comes in early and stays late and comes in on the weekends to complete tasks for The Giving Closet. Her normal day consists of answering phone calls, receiving don

Subway: Eat Fresh-Ish  By Grace Dawe       The smell of fresh vegetables and toasted bread wafts into your nose while walking down the steps towards the Bloomsburg University Subway. Greens and yellows jump out at you, displaying the look of freshness.  The slightly warm-toned lights beam down throughout the store providing a sense of comfort to those far away from home.        When looking around, the brightly lit long counter is the highlight of the room. Three employees stand guard behind it, making sandwiches for the hungry customers.  They all wear black t-shirts with the subway logo across them and a black subway hat to finish off the uniform. Their hair is always up and out of the way and a look of enthusiasm paints each of their faces. The first employee on the right greets the customers and puts meat and cheese on their sandwiches. The station in front of them holds many different meats and cheeses. All of the cheese is neatly cut into triangles so that it can fit on the sandw

Nadia the Ne Plus Ultra of CA's

Image
The first thing you noticed before you started reading this is something along the lines of "what in the world does Ne Plus Ultra mean and what does that have to do with Nadia the CA?" If you want to know the answer to that, you are just going to have to keep reading. Starting with a little background information, Nadia Simon is a CA at Elwell Hall at Bloomsburg University. You may find her working the front desk, talking to people asking them about their day, or just simply doing something to make the environment at Elwell a better place.       Being a CA was not something that Nadia had on her bucket list. She originally had no interest in being a CA, but when the opportunity presented itself, she ran with it. "At first I didn't want to be a CA lol. My CA nominated me and I was confused on why because I didn't see myself doing it. One day I really thought about it and I realized that this would be a great opportunity because I love helping people and I knew

Cats Galore! Cats in Bloom Cafe

Image
Neil, chilling out  Located on 102 West Main Street, Bloomsburg, in what used to be an optometrist's office, lies a feline haven. As you walk into the establishment, it invites you to settle in and relax. Warm colors cover the surrounding furniture and a fresh scent lingers in the air, putting your mind at ease. The café is Decorated in Valentines Day décor, coinciding with the season. 'La vie en Rose' plays gracefully through the café as you get checked in.   Neil, a co-founder and a main volunteer at Cats in Bloom, checks you into the establishment with a beaming smile.  "Have you ever been in Cats in Bloom?" He gleefully asks as you walk in the two front doors with a relaxed tone of voice. He adds, "Make sure you close the first door before you open the next!" He explains that some of the cats would like to venture outside, if given the chance.  A few young people, accompanied by an adult orange and grey cat, type tranquilly on laptops while loungin

Welcome to Schuylkill Hall!

Image
As you enter Schuylkill Hall, you will see a beautifully decorated lobby and an office populated by one or more of our CAs. You will almost always be greeted with a smile and a "Hey! How's your day going?" from one of our staff members. They are always working very hard to make everybody who walks in feel welcome. You may ask yourself, what do CAs really do? Well, twice a semester, the CAs work together on a theme for their hallways and decorate all the residents' doors with their names. Our four, wonderful CAs also take turns on desk shift. This is where they sit at the front desk to greet people as they walk in and make themselves available as a resource for residents. They also hold events for everyone like scavenger hunts, pancake parties and lots of other fun activities!           "Nothing like a pancake to start your morning right!" Mady says bubbly.  "Good morning beautiful! How are we today?" she asks a passing resident.

Sweet Life on the 5th Floor

Image
When you first walk in to any dorm complex in Bloomsburg, you are instantly greeted by a warm smile from community assistants.   CA's are a huge part of campus living and resident life.  CA Nadia works in Elwell and watches over the 5th floor west wing.  Students are always embraced with Nadia's beaming smile as she asks in a chipper voice, "Hey! How are you today?" to her passing by residents.     Nadia Simon is a bright sophomore here at Bloomsburg and studies middle level education with a focus on English.  Her caring demeanor and enthusiasm makes her job seem easy. Some may say that she is the perfect candidate for a CA position.  Her outgoing and approachable personality make it easy to talk to her.   Nadia's plan for next year is to get a higher up CA position, as generosity and vibrance comes easy to her.      As a CA, Nadia has many important tasks and responsibilities to fulfill.  Most of the time you will run into your CA while they are on desk

Last of Its Kind

All Saints Catholic Academy has been the only catholic school in Bayonne, New Jersey since 2008. Prior to the school opening, there were four parishes in Bayonne that had elementary schools attached to their name. In 2006, however, it became apparent that the funding and finance was not enough to support four schools. Discussion began about converting the four schools into one singular catholic elementary school for the city. For the past 15 years, All Saints Catholic Academy (ASCA) has believed in its mission of "Faith, Respect, Service, and Academics". Currently housing just under 300 students, ASCA provides an education for children starting in Pre-K-3 through eighth grade. ASCA School Logo While ASCA is a Catholic school, you do not have to be part of a parish, catholic, Christian, or religious at all to attend the school. In fact, there are many students who are Jewish, Muslim, and other types of religions in attendance at All Saints. This factor can be extremely benef

Home Away from Home; Bloom Health and Fitness

Image
Bloom Health and Fitness has been more than just a gym to many of its customers for years. As Nick Vest puts it, "It's not a super meat headed gym filled with steroid users and kids who don't know what they're doing." He's been coming to this gym since he was a little kid, shadowing his father, Denny, in a way. They've been friends with the owners since the gym opened. Bob and Kriste Groshek opened the gym twenty-six years ago after Bloomnautica, another gym, shut closed its doors. "This was all on him," Kriste hummed with a bright smile as she sorted through papers. She had to stand on the edge of her brand-new sneakers since she was a short, browned hair woman who looks young for her age. "He was an exercise science major just like your boyfriend. He went to Philly," I cringed to that last part as she laughed. "Yeah, I hated the city too! He was finishing a doctorate down there, but he got word of this place being for sale.
